Week Three: J-Horror: A Wild Sheep Chase

After reading the seven short stories this week they seemed to run together, and got a bit repetitive. However I did enjoy them, and especially the one with Hoichi. As in terms of good versus evil it was hard to depict who really was evil besides the "goblins". The evil whatever they were was ultimately determined by the characters in the story. Most of the people seemed to be average villagers living amongst these legends, and every now and again a priest would show up with some sort of holy advice. The author clearly makes these stories to give you an opportunity to think about them. He wants you to sit down, read these stories and ponder, not just read it and be done. I also really enjoy legend type stories/films. It gives you a moment t think about what other people may believe in or don’t.

*out of ordinary strange for the 2 wood cutters

* Hoishi gets his ears cut off from human imperfection

*each story has their own moment of crystalization and they almost come together but dont

* lot of space, quiet, silences, reflective time

*More traditional jap has much silence and time of reflection, things stop, theres pauses

*limited animation creates different feelings for each person who reads the stories.

Overall I really liked the stories, and the material that went with it in class. Interesting discussion on everyone’s different views, even my own.
